I am not saying that piano music is bad. There are some very good piano music composers. Bach was one. Beethoven made some of his best piano music in the last third of his career. Mendelssohn was probably more famous for his piano music than for his symphonies. Even Schubert, one of the greatest piano music composers, did not have a huge impact on the classical music world as he would have liked. In fact, the only composers of note who wrote piano music that was truly big in the classical music world were Chopin and Schumann.
It's hard for us to imagine what it was like for a 19th century pianist to practice piano music. Someone recently sent me a recording of a pianist playing music written for the clavichord. Although I have never played the clavichord, the sound of it is quite different than a piano. It's got a very raucous sound, and a lot of sound in the middle. It's not a sweet sound like a pianist playing Mozart. Even a beginner will understand the difference. You can hear that the pianist is struggling to play it as they are rewarded for the effort with a failure. The pianist got what they wanted, but not what they were expecting. Music for the clavichord is all about over-the-top dynamic contrasts, sometimes almost to the point where it is hard to hear what the composer is trying to convey. You can hear this in the recording I am posting. It is not a pleasant sound at all.
Monument Valley is a game I love. However, it is quite challenging and I really struggled to finish the game. I thought a lot about how I felt after playing the game. I played it for an hour and it took me six days to beat the game. What’s funny is that I felt some sort of emotional experience when I finished the game. It was a good experience. The game rewards you with “the feeling of completion”.
Stardew Valley is one of those games that you can play forever. If you've completed the Community Center or the Joja route and reached max friendship with all of the villagers, you may think you've done most of what there is to do. However, that's just the start.
