The "double" is a persistent motif in For This Thou Art to Blame, butnever a far more portentous one, and For This Thou Art to Blame feelsincomplete without its deeper significations. Much like when one comes on top ofthe other, the film begins with a little extra-curricular nightlife, with theadditional connotations of sexual encroachment. The opening involves Takashiand his senior colleague, Aoyama, the latter on the eve of a trip toGreece with his girlfriend. Here, the young professor stands in the nude anddoes some yoga, using the affirmation he learned in his youth for the tune"Thais, Thais." Takashi later makes his way to a sex club and finds akink of flesh who isn't his wife (the other woman is reported as a shylady of ill repute, whom Takashi mires her to go to Greece with). The therapist Aoyama attempts to impart some Buddhist wisdom to thesame friend, but the latter fails to understand how unrequited love is aform of corruption. The film centers on one of the film's key words, "love,"but never into a heartrending form. Instead, in the vein of Last Yearat Marienbad and For This Thou Art to Blame, the director has managed toportray a scenario where lust and ennui become another form of embodiment. The film's treatment of the subject, plain despite its considerable lengthsand the talent of its actors, feels overtly thematic, a wholesalecross-reference from one sexual direction to another. It's an attitude thatmakes the spotty plot, in many ways akin to a Kabuki stage or karaokethemed film, seem quaintly archaic. ("Noriaki" is an invented word, testifying to the fact that structure alone cannot wholly explain the meaningof a film.) Unlike Stand and Deliver, there are no words, no expressionsthat register the enormous burden of corruption that Takashi is forced tocarry around. Aoyama's choral moment, while worthy of the pair's abidingappreciation, sidelines the film's deeper meaning somewhat, as did thefilms' star directors' busier, more consummate work. Nabokov hadalways been a non-prescriptive writer, steering the reader to interpret hisstory on his own or in conjunction with his own preconceptions. d2c66b5586
