In the early 1970s, a study of the women's practice of nudism at the Colorado State Reformatory for Women found that most women valued the social aspects of practicing nudism, finding that the discipline of nudity helped them to relax. In the prison, the women practiced the discipline by wearing the only two pieces of clothing on their bodies, a waist and a top. Each woman was given a swimsuit and swimming suit to wear in the prison pool, and the women picked their own swimsuits and tops. Most women chose to wear the required top and the suit underneath, and some were happy that they were able to cover their lower bodies. Many women found the discipline of nudity to be relaxing, and some remarked that this was something they had not experienced since childhood. While many women joked about the discipline of their nudity, others said that nudism was teaching them to respect their bodies and the state's laws. This study was one of the first to describe the social and psychological benefits of nudism. In addition, it added to the growing body of literature that women were just as flexible and physically capable as men in the nude, and that this experience was a valuable part of life.[24]
For the next fifty years, nude swimming was routinely practiced at public pools with no formal requirement that suits be worn. In 1966, Ron Chapman, owner of the Fair Oaks Community Center in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York, decided to authorize bathers to swim nude. As a member of the APHA, he questioned the authority of the APHA to require nude swimming and exposed himself to legal risk for challenging the APHA. Other centers followed his lead in 1967, and a few more in the 1970s. In all, about 400 of the nearly 3,000 public pools in the United States had sanctioned nude swimming for men and women in the last decade of the 20th century.[9]
