Steve, As you can see from the couple of pictures you have posted, blowin white creates good drama and a strong image if used appropriately -- you have to have your exposure really dialed in. The exposure must be in the correct range for the area of the picture and atmospheric. Severe over exposure in this situation will result in the "washed out" look of the 2nd image.

While the post might seem controversial, I really didn't intend it to be a "debate" on the subject. You may also hear the opposite, and I have had these debates myself on different aspects of camera composition and lighting, but they are always very nice.
I think that more than anything is the opinion / viewpoint that I am trying to share is that of the photojournalist. In my opinion, there is one approach that every quality photojournalist should use regardless of subject matter. This includes the framing, lens and lighting used. To me, that applies to still life, action, portraits, street, studio, etc. I will explain -- the approach should be as consistent as possible, primarily thinking about the lighting and framing first, and then depending on the subject matter. Too many people attempt to make a great photo on day light, and then decide lighting is a problem, and move indoors because of that.
